Though the media spends a lot less time covering it, most protesters raising their voices and marching in our streets have done so peacefully. And yet, peaceful protestors are facing unnecessary arrests and consistent escalations in force from police. Making matters worse, our country’s cash bail system essentially criminalizes poverty and magnifies the inequality in our system of justice by disproportionately impacting communities of color. Cash bail means well off protesters -- more often white -- are able to get out quickly while less affluent protesters -- more often Black and brown -- remain detained no matter how trivial the alleged offense. People unable to afford bail can be detained for weeks and months on end while they await trial, which is all the more dangerous during this pandemic as jails are one of the top flashpoints for the spread of COVID-19. We have to dismantle the systemic racism that corrodes our system of justice. But people who can’t afford to post bail simply can’t wait for big legislation out of Washington. They need our help now. That’s why we’re asking you to donate to the community bail funds working to post bail for people across our country. Your contribution will have an immediate impact: If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: Thank you for donating today. Anything you are able to contribute will make a difference right now. — Charles Charles Chamberlain, Chair ![]() |
