TELL CONGRESS: Despite a law banning insider trading, members of Congress continue to exploit their positions of power for personal financial gain. It’s corruption, plain and simple. We need our lawmakers to support new bipartisan legislation that will truly ban Congressional stock trading. Sign the petition: Stop members of Congress from owning or trading individual stocks!
Hi, In 2012, Congress passed the STOCK Act, which was supposed to prevent insider trading by members of Congress. But lawmakers continue to exploit their positions for personal financial gain with no consequences.1 Between 2019 and 2021, 1 in 7 members of Congress violated the STOCK Act, and 97 members traded stocks tied to industries their committees oversee. This is corruption, plain and simple. It’s clear we need change to put an end to Congressional stock trading. Thankfully, Rep. AOC (D) and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R) have introduced the Bipartisan Restoring Faith in Government Act. We need all our lawmakers to support this cross-party effort. “When members of Congress own and trade stock in companies they regulate, they undermine the democracy that they were elected to serve,” said Debra Perlin, Policy Director at Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. This erosion of trust in government is why Americans across the political spectrum overwhelmingly support reform. A stunning 86% of Americans, including 87% of Republicans, 88% of Democrats, and 81% of Independents, favor banning stock trading by members of Congress and their families. We need to capitalize on this broad, bipartisan support and push our lawmakers to ban Congressional stock trading now!
