John,

As the public demonstrations continue throughout our Valley and nation, it is imperative that we separate lawful, thoughtful exhibitions of peaceful protest from the egregious acts of criminal behavior and violence. The event leading to the death of Mr. George Floyd was a criminal example of police abuse. It was not policing.

Now, we must open our hearts and our ears to the cries of those who have the right to be heard. The fears and concerns of our minority community members are being realized. Now is our time to act on behalf of all Americans to ensure justice is served.

We will continue to face the challenge of suppressing criminal actions inconsistent with the First Amendment right to be heard. We must work together as a united community to protect our neighbors, our businesses, and our civil rights.

We must not let the noise of these criminal actions silence the words and message of the oppressed. We must change.

In service,

— Sheriff Paul Penzone
