John,
Today is my son Jordan’s birthday. He would’ve turned 30 years old.
These milestones are difficult for those of us who have lost loved ones. Since Jordan was killed in a senseless shooting in 2012 – when he was just 17 years old – not a day has gone by where I don’t mourn his death. But days like this are especially painful.
I can’t help but wonder where he’d be if he was still with us today. Maybe he’d have finished college or served in the military and found a career he was passionate about, maybe even a career in politics (public service always resonated with him). Maybe he’d be married, and even have a family of his own.
There are so many milestones I’d looked forward to forever that we’ll never be able to experience together. I wanted to see him continue to lead and someday make change in the world.
Jordan was robbed of these moments when a man with a gun decided to take his life at a gas station – because he didn’t like the music Jordan and his friends were playing.
And every day since, more families are going through the same thing I am. They’re seeing loved ones gunned down in the streets, lives taken by domestic violence with a deadly weapon, or their best friend die by suicide. Far too many politicians want to turn a blind eye.
We can do better. We must do better. I work to honor Jordan’s memory and fight to prevent more tragedies like this one from taking place.
Jordan, I hope you’d be proud of me today. I know I’d be proud of you.
With love,
Mom
