If we don’t speak up now, financial predators will get free rein.

Hello John, I’m Sarah Lane, the Executive Director of JanePAC.

Back in 2007, our country faced a major economic catastrophe. The Big Banks gambled with our future, and predatory lenders trapped low-income families into high-risk mortgages. It led to millions of Americans losing their homes and livelihoods, and caused a recession that went on for years.

Not long after the crash occurred, I went to Washington, DC to work for Sen. Jeff Merkley, who served on the Senate Banking Committee — one of the key committees tasked with Wall Street reform.

One of the proposals Senator Merkley fought for — as did so many others — was for the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. If the foreclosure crisis taught us anything, it’s that the financial and mortgage service industries needed to be regulated, and the American people needed a consumer watchdog.

The CFPB was the answer. It was built to hold financial predators accountable, stop discriminatory lending, crack down on junk fees, and return stolen money to consumers. In the years since, it’s returned over $21 billion to consumers who were cheated.

Now, Elon Musk is doing everything in his power to pressure House Republicans into dismantling the agency.

Will you join me in calling on Congress to defend the CFPB and keep Musk’s hands off our consumer protections?

See, Musk and Trump claim to be champions of the “little guy,” but let’s be clear — this is about protecting billionaires, not working people. They want to gut the CFPB so Wall Street can go back to business as usual, free from oversight. Without the CFPB, banks will be free to hike fees, discriminate against Black and Brown communities, and target vulnerable consumers with abusive loans.

This is just another way for the wealthy and powerful to rig the system in their favor while the rest of us pay the price.

I can’t tell you how disheartening it is to see them try to destroy something that has done so much good for working people. But this fight isn’t over. If we make our voices loud enough, we can stop Musk and his allies from gutting the CFPB.

Congress has a choice: defend the only agency that protects consumers from financial predators or side with billionaires like Musk who want to rig the system for themselves. Let’s make sure they hear us loud and clear.

Will you send a message to your representative right now demanding they protect the CFPB before it’s too late?

Let’s do this!
