Hey John, Giving up. Checking out. Tuning out. It might be tempting to throw up our hands and accept the damage to our movement during Donald Trump’s four-year term as president. But that would be a huge mistake. The stakes are simply too high: Gerrymandering poses a critical threat to fair representation for millions of people across the country. One day we will look back on this moment and ask ourselves if we did enough to resist Republicans’ efforts to distort the will of the people and entrench an artificial political advantage that could last for years or even decades. Right now, you can respond to Trump’s first week by being one of the action-takers — one of the champions for fairness — and contributing to the NDRC’s relentless efforts to advance fair electoral maps across the country.
We must not fall into the trap of accepting defeat in the fight against gerrymandering — especially as Republicans are actively proposing wildly partisan maps in Ohio, trying to throw out votes in North Carolina, and doing everything possible to create an artificial political advantage that denies the will of the people in elections across the country. As Attorney General Eric Holder has said: “Together we can change that and restore fairness to our democracy. Join our fight because politicians shouldn’t choose their voters — voters should choose their representatives.” At this very moment, we are actively involved in crucial redistricting efforts, state-level elections, and monitoring key court decisions that — and we’re not exaggerating when we say this — will help determine the balance of power in the United States for years or even decades to come. If we stay strong and work hard, we can win — together. Thanks for being part of this fight! — NDRC HQ
