BREAKING NEWS

John,

Massachusetts made history today, becoming the first state to implement a law ending the sale of all flavored tobacco products

That's right:

Menthol cigarettes, which the tobacco industry has used to target kids, African-Americans, and other communities for decades: GONE.

❌Little cigars in flavors like grape and "banana smash" that come in cheap packs of two that are popular with kids: GONE.

Smokeless tobacco in fruity and minty flavors that make dipping seem harmless: GONE.

❌Flavored e-cigarettes fueling a youth addiction crisis: GONE.

All the flavored products that mask the harshness of tobacco, making it easier to start and harder to quit: They're all off the shelves in Massachusetts as of today, thanks to advocates like you!

Flavors are undoubtedly fueling the youth nicotine addiction crisis. The vast majority of kids who use tobacco start with a flavored product, and most youth e-cigarette users cite flavors as the reason.

To date, spurred by our nationwide campaign: four states have stopped flavored e-cigarettes – Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island – and 260 cities have passed restrictions on flavored tobacco products!

But Massachusetts' historic law taking effect today makes it the first state to end the sale of menthol cigarettes and stop the tobacco industry’s predatory targeting of kids and communities of color.

"This is really important to me. The tobacco industry definitely targets youth. They want us to replace the smokers who have died from the illnesses they caused by making the products cheap, sweet and easy to get. If we didn't have the flavors, we wouldn't have such an epidemic." – Sarah Ryan, 19; Holbrook, MA

Massachusetts has set a terrific example for the rest of the country. It's giving all of our state campaigns momentum at a critical time. With your help, we'll seize this momentum.

Thanks for all you do,

Kevin O'Flaherty
Director, Northeast Region
