Jack,

Last week, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced his plans to rename Fort Moore back to its original name: Fort Benning.

For the people who have lived, trained, and worked around this post, this has always been an emotional issue. While people may have differing opinions about the post’s name, a commission was established by the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act — a law that had overwhelming bipartisan support — to address this and remove the names of enemies of our nation from U.S. military installations.

In accordance with the law and deliberation and input from the community and veterans, the post was renamed after Lt. Gen. Hal Moore and his wife, Julia. Hal Moore was a hero of the Vietnam War, and he and his wife Julia were critical in establishing how the military notifies and cares for spouses of fallen servicemembers. Lt. Gen. Moore had extensive ties to the post while on active duty and in retirement, and he was laid to rest there.

The Moores embodied the Army’s values: loyalty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, personal courage, and duty. Having their name adorned in this post was well-deserved and symbolized our country’s commitment to our service members and their families.

The Secretary of Defense's dismissal of the Moores’ service to the Army, our military families, and our nation is disrespectful. It is a rejection of the values and symbolism that Hal and Julia Moore embodied.

To join me in condemning the decision to rename Fort Moore, please add your name here. [[link removed]]
