Shared Learning Collaborative Team: Northern Mariana Islands
Earlier this year we selected 8 teams from across the US to partner with us in implementing our reproductive well-being work within their communities.
One of the teams participating is the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, a territory of the US located in the Pacific Ocean, which has a population of 53,883 people, many of whom must rely on publicly funded services. A 2012 survey showed a successful reduction in teen births and sexual activity through a school-sponsored program. However, recently young people in the territory have expressed privacy concerns which has stopped them from going to a local clinic to obtain birth control or STI testing. The team plans to address these barriers to improve the reproductive well-being for those that remain most marginalized.
