Dear John,

With the Friday deadline looming to fund the government, House Republicans passed a Continuing Resolution yesterday that would maintain current spending levels and keep the government open. Only one Democrat voted to support it—one of our terrific No Labels leaders, Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME).

We are excited to host Rep. Golden for a call tomorrow at 1 PM ET to discuss his vote and what happens next in the shutdown battle.

The CR faces a highly uncertain future in the Senate. Our country will need courageous Democratic senators to follow Rep. Golden’s lead and vote for this bill. If they do not, the government will shut down.

Since No Labels’ founding in 2010, we have seen 14 instances of shutdown brinksmanship, with actual shutdowns in three of those instances. Every time, our message has been the same: It is never acceptable to use the specter of a shutdown as a bargaining chip. That is a red line that should not be crossed.

This time is different for a few reasons.

This is about more than debates over funding levels and how money is appropriated. It is a fundamental disagreement about DOGE and the Trump Administration’s approach to governance. While most prior shutdowns were initiated by the right flank of the Republican Party, Democrats appear willing to force this shutdown as a cudgel to extract concessions from the administration.

It is not clear what the path forward will be. What is clear is that a bipartisan deal will be required. Our allies in the Senate are well positioned to play an important role, and we are calling on brave Democratic senators to vote for this CR.

As the deadline looms, who better to walk us through the state of play than the lone ranger in the House Democratic Caucus with the courage to vote to keep our government open?
