Dear Friend,

In the newsletter this week...

But first...

Local Facebook groups for large cities like Belfast, Edinburgh and Manchester and smaller communities like Banbury, Melton Mowbray and Oldham have been targeted with bogus appeals.

The hoax posts checked by Full Fact in February include bogus warnings about a “serial killer”, a man who’d supposedly murdered two police officers and an alleged knife attacker, and claims that a woman had been found stabbed by a local canal.
By using emotive appeals for help or alarmist warnings about dangers to the community, hoax posts can drive high engagement in local Facebook groups.
