Elon Musk and his lapdog Trump are ramping up their attacks on protest. On Monday, Trump claimed the Left is “illegally” boycotting Tesla—just days after calling for universities to lose federal funding for allowing protests and the sudden arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian protester in New York City.
We knew this was coming. Their agenda depends on crushing dissent. But here’s what we know:
- Those in power will keep rewriting the rules—legal or not—to serve their interests.
- We must be clear: what’s legal isn’t always what’s just.
This country was built on protest, legal or otherwise. The Boston Tea Party. The Freedom Rides. The Underground Railroad. Stonewall. Every major movement for justice has faced repression—and won by refusing to back down.
As Frederick Douglass said, “Power concedes nothing without a demand.”
