Trump's Order Threatens Our Forests—Will You Help Save Them?

Dear friend,

Last week, President Trump signed an alarming executive order threatening millions of acres of our nation's most important forests. This directive mandates a drastic increase in logging across 280 million acres of national forests and public lands—an area nearly three times the size of California. If allowed to stand, this order will dismantle decades of hard-fought protections for wildlife and the environment, placing vulnerable species like grizzly bears, spotted owls, and wild salmon at even greater risk of extinction.
What This Executive Order Means for Our Forests

This order includes harmful measures that will:

- Expand Timber Production: The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and Bureau of Land Management are being directed to ramp up logging targets, threatening critical forests.

- Devastate National Treasures: This order threatens the Tongass National Forest, Earth's largest remaining temperate rainforest. We must keep chainsaws out of places like the Tongass, which absorb vast amounts of carbon and support diverse wildlife and local communities.

- Bypass Endangered Species Protections: Trump's order seeks to bypass the Endangered Species Act, one of the most valuable laws protecting wildlife on the verge of extinction.

- Exclude Public Input: The Executive Order calls for exclusions from NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act), which guarantees public participation in decisions about public lands. This would pave the way for corporate profit over environmental protection.

Perhaps most concerning, Trump's plan mirrors the Fix Our Forests Act (H.R. 471), which is currently making its way through Congress. This bill would enact many of the same harmful cuts to NEPA and the ESA that the Executive Order demands, accelerating the logging of our oldest and largest trees for timber. Despite claims of wildfire prevention, removing these fire-resistant trees actually increases fire risk and damages ecosystems and watersheds. The striking similarities between the Fix Our Forests Act and Trump's Timber EO reveal the true agenda: profiting off public lands while excluding the public from the decision-making process.
We Are Fighting Back, & We Need Your Help

We refuse to sit by while this administration threatens our environment while a complicit Congress refuses to step in and protect public lands from greedy corporations. The Sierra Club is already taking bold action to protect our forests and climate. We are mobilizing thousands of supporters nationwide, organizing protests, taking action in communities, and pushing back against all efforts to destroy our public lands for a few bucks. We are pressuring Congress to block this executive order and oppose the Fix Our Forests Act, while advocating for stronger protections for our public lands.
