Legal Advocacy Update: Egale Canada is in Court Standing up for Gender Diverse Youth in Alberta

Egale Canada, Skipping Stone, and five individual gender diverse youth in Alberta (supported by their parents) were in court earlier this week taking legal action against the Government of Alberta’s anti-trans legislation. Represented by lawyers from McCarthy Tétrault LLP and Egale, we are asking for an injunction to prevent the denial of health care to gender diverse youth while the constitutional case is heard.

The actions of the Government of Alberta are unprecedented in this country. No government in Canada has ever enacted legislation prohibiting essential and life-saving gender affirming health care.

Everyone deserves access to health care and the support of medical professionals without interference from their government. We will use every tool at our disposal to stand up for the rights, safety and freedoms of 2SLGBTQI young people in Alberta.

Egale Canada is excited to announce that Helen Kennedy will be transitioning from her role as Executive Director into a new executive role as Managing Director where she will lead essential conversations about the implications of navigating a changing political climate for 2SLGBTQI communities. This role will be key in confronting the increasing hate and misinformation threatening the rights of diverse trans and queer communities.

As Helen transitions, the Egale Board is actively seeking a visionary new Executive Director to propel Egale’s mission forward. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will build on Egale’s proud 39-year history to create a thriving, efficient, and resilient organization.

Literature Review: The Experiences and Challenges of Being an Affirming Caregiver

Parents and caregivers face unique challenges when their child comes out as a sexual and/or gender minority. It is more important than ever for parents to be affirming adults, as we witness a political climate that is increasingly polarized with regards to the existence of, and healthcare supports for, 2SLGBTQI people.

Queering Mental Health: eModules for Mental Health Service Providers

Egale's Queering Mental Health eModules were developed based on research and feedback from 2SLGBTQI service providers and service seekers to better equip service providers with more in-depth and expansive knowledge on how to provide more holistic and attuned care to 2SLGBTQI people.

These trainings include stories from service seekers and service providers as they share their insights about queering mental health services. Along with readings, videos, scenarios, and interactive activities, they also explore real-life scenarios and strategies, so that you are equipped with practical skills to provide 2SLGBTQI-affirming care.

Legal Advocacy Win: Court Finds Use of “Groomer” Slur Against Drag Performers to be Defamatory Hate Speech

A decision from the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in a case that Egale Canada intervened in has found that online posts calling drag performers “groomers” was hate speech, and that the posts “fostered disinformation and hate.”

The decision resulted from two cases (Rainbow Alliance Dryden et al v. Webster and Crichton et al v. Webster). In both cases, Mr. Webster made posts accusing drag performers of being “groomers”, and in the Rainbow Alliance Dryden case, these baseless allegations were also made against the local 2SLGBTQI community organization, Rainbow Alliance Dryden.

Statement on the Government of Canada's Signing of the Belem do para Convention

As a member of the LGBTTT&TS Coalition of the Americas, Egale welcomes the Government of Canada's signature on the Inter-American Convention on the Prevention, Punishment and Eradication of Violence against Women (Belém do Pará Convention). Through signing, Canada further demonstrates the importance of preventing and eradicating gender-based violence for women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals while underscoring Canada's commitment to upholding the values of human rights and gender equality through the Inter-American system.

Egale has staunchly advocated for the ratification of this convention through numerous human rights processes and will continue to engage in the Inter-American system to further Canada's human rights commitments internationally.
