See how reader-funded journalism is changing the world

Hi Reader,

On Monday, we began our two-week spring member drive, and I’m thrilled to say that already, more than 1,000 readers stepped up with a donation. Join them with your gift of any amount. We need folks like you to support our deep-dive journalism that holds the powerful to account by shining a light on corruption and injustice.

We shine that light with a purpose: Our mission is to use the moral force of investigative journalism to spur change. Our work has led to laws being passed, people resigning from powerful positions, victims receiving compensation and much more. We carefully track the impact of our work, and here are a few recent examples of stories that led to action:

  • Lawmakers in at least seven states are seeking expanded abortion access, including some bills that were filed in direct response to ProPublica’s reporting on the fatal consequences of abortion bans.
  • More child support payments are flowing directly to children after at least six states have rewritten their laws and policies since we reported in 2021 that $1.7 billion of that money was being redirected into state coffers annually.
  • Institutions across the U.S. returned more than 10,300 Native American ancestors to tribes in 2024, as tracked by ProPublica’s database of museums’ and universities’ compliance with federal repatriation law. This increased emphasis on repatriation is in tandem with our long-running investigation bringing the serious lack of compliance to light.
  • The Department of Justice and eight states sued the maker of a rent-setting software and six of the nation’s largest landlords following our 2022 investigation into how the software’s algorithm boosts profits. The lawsuit asserted that the software facilitated illegal price-fixing, reduced competition among landlords and resulted in higher rents. (Senior Vice President Jennifer Bowcock of the software maker, RealPage, called the federal case “flawed” and said the company is “committed to vigorously defending ourselves and our customers against the DOJ’s accusations.”)

We’ll never stop shining a light on abuses of power and breaches of the public trust in an effort to hold people in power accountable. And thanks to donations from folks like you, we’re growing larger, getting stronger and spurring more impact than ever before. Give today, and help ProPublica ensure that we continue to have the resources to follow the most important stories wherever they lead — for however long it takes.

Thanks so much,

Jill Shepherd
