Dear John,

This week, the federal government runs out of money. Despite holding the White House and majorities in Congress, Republicans are scrambling at the last minute.

Instead of reaching across the aisle, Congressional Republicans are using this opportunity to ram through an extreme, partisan resolution that cuts:

  • Funding for NIH by $280 million, which will stall research on cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, ALS, heart disease, diabetes, and many other health problems
  • Rent subsidies for low-income and hardworking Americans by more than $700 million

To make matters worse, this Republican spending bill reneges on veterans’ medical care and fuels uncertainty. As more veterans are enrolled in VA care than ever thanks to the PACT Act, this bill fails to include $22.8 billion for the Toxic Exposures Fund to care for veterans exposed to burn pits, Agent Orange, and other toxic substances.

I spoke on the House floor about this injustice.

This de-funding bill also does nothing to address the items we desperately need to fix.

It does nothing to protect veterans from being fired from the federal workforce and does nothing to safeguard your personal data from DOGE and Elon Musk. What this measure does is give Trump a blank check to keep pushing disastrous tariffs that raise the cost of everyday goods.

Their chaos is all for one goal: to use taxpayer money meant to serve middle-class Americans, veterans, and students to fund tax breaks for billionaires.

I am a NO on this Republican partisan spending bill.

Keep holding the line, keep the pressure on Republicans who are more interested in showing fealty to Trump than to this country, and stay strong in this fight.

Sincerely,

Rep. Mark Takano signature
