![]() “Trump tariffs could make things more expensive for American farmers” [1] Farming is a tough job, John. Montana’s farmers roll up their sleeves every single day to grow the food that our nation relies on. These hard-working Montanans deserve leaders who truly understand their needs. But by implementing a 25 percent tariff on the United States’ largest trade partners, President Trump is making farmers’ lives harder — and even more expensive.
John, since Trump enacted a series of broad tariffs earlier this month, we’ve already seen the cost of gasoline, groceries, and so much more skyrocket. At a moment when Montanans are already struggling with the cost of living, these tariffs are forcing families to dig deeper and deeper into their pockets just to afford everyday essentials. But these tariffs are especially harmful to farmers. In 2023, American farmers spent nearly $36 billion on fertilizers, with a substantial portion dedicated to potash, a key fertilizer ingredient primarily imported from Canada. Thanks to Trump’s tariffs, farmers can now expect to pay 25 percent more for the same amount of fertilizer. And in the long run, those costs are going to get passed down to the American people at the checkout line, John. Let’s be clear: President Trump’s tariffs represent the single largest tax increase in a generation. While Trump works day and night to deliver trillion-dollar tax cuts to Elon Musk and his billionaire buddies, he’s sticking the rest of us with the bill. It’s wrong, it’s dangerous, and it needs to end.
