John,
Tomorrow, Republicans from the House Ways & Means Committee are meeting behind closed doors to decide just how much they need to cut from essential programs—like Medicaid and SNAP—so they can make tax cuts for billionaires permanent.[1]
They’re meeting in secret because they don’t want the public to know their real plan: stealing from the most vulnerable to enrich their wealthy campaign donors. House GOP leaders have even told their members not to hold town hall meetings while they’re home because they know their constituents won’t stand for this betrayal.
The numbers are staggering: $880 billion in Medicaid cuts, ripping health care away from tens of millions. $230 billion slashed from SNAP, forcing working families to go hungry. All to pay for a massive giveaway to the richest 1%.[2]
We have a narrow path to stop this. If every Democrat holds the line and just a few swing-district Republicans defect, we can kill this attack on working Americans before it becomes law. But we need overwhelming public pressure, starting right now.
Demand Congress reject cuts to Medicaid and SNAP to fund tax breaks for the rich.
The impact of these cuts would be devastating. New Medicaid red-tape requirements alone would cause 36 million people to lose coverage even when they are still eligible to receive healthcare assistance.[3]
Cuts to Medicaid expansion would undo the gains that helped 20 million Americans get healthcare under the Affordable Care Act. And capping federal Medicaid aid to states could push tens of millions more off their coverage entirely.
SNAP cuts are just as cruel. Reducing already-meager benefits from $6.20 per day to $4.80 would leave families struggling to put food on the table at a time when grocery prices are rising and 41 million people rely on food assistance.
House Republicans want to ram these cuts through in just a few weeks before people have a chance to fight back. And if they succeed, the Senate could follow.
We need to act now. Take action to tell Congress: No cuts to Medicaid or SNAP to fund billionaire tax breaks.
Together, we can stop this assault on working families and demand a government that prioritizes people, not billionaires.
