This Friday at midnight, funding for the government will run out, and we’ll be facing a shutdown that will furlough federal workers and disrupt many federal services.
Last weekend, House Republicans introduced a spending bill that proposes increased funding for defense while slashing vital non-defense programs that millions of Americans rely on.
This proposal would give Elon Musk and President Trump the power to fire thousands of Social Security Administration employees and steer lucrative government contracts to Musk’s companies, like Starlink and SpaceX. It would also slash rent assistance for low-income and working families and gut funding for climate change research.
The House is expected to vote on the bill today, but even if it passes the House, it will need at least 60 votes in the Senate, which only has 53 Republican lawmakers.
We must stand firm against these irresponsible tactics. Americans deserve a government that prioritizes their needs over partisan gamesmanship.
