This week in Congress, our democracy faces a consequential test: Trump and Republicans in Congress are driving the government toward a shutdown, proposing a budget that cuts funding for healthcare, nutritional assistance, veterans' benefits, and public lands. The Republican budget will take away good-paying jobs in our communities, raise energy costs, and strip away environmental protections to pay for billionaire tax cuts. But House Speaker Johnson and Trump need Democrats in Congress to support their dangerous budget to pass it and avert shutdown, so we have leverage to fight back and stop it.

Before the Eaton Fire, Altadena Was an Outdoors Haven for Black Families

January's horrific fires ravaged Altadena, a community right outside Los Angeles tucked into the foothills of the San Gabriel mountains. Altadena was a longtime haven for Black families looking to own a home with access to the outdoors, and a diverse community close to nature. Its proximity to the foothills and the strong community kept families there for decades.

But many families lost everything to the climate-fueled fires.

EPA Under Trump Besieged by Mass Firings, Axed Programs, and Funding Cuts

The Environmental Protection Agency—the federal watchdog tasked with safeguarding the environment and human health—is facing "unprecedented" attacks under the new Trump administration, putting Americans' ability to breathe clean air, drink clean water, and live healthy lives at risk.

These attacks are part of a sweeping effort to dismantle critical government agencies.

Our nation's veterans and service members reflect every aspect of what makes America one of the world's most diverse and multicultural societies. They also have a legacy directly tied to our public lands. Today, about a quarter of the National Park Service workforce are military veterans.
