New study series: Open Shop or Union Town? Power, Organization and Struggle in the Wicked City

Starting Saturday, March 22nd @ 11am in-person in Koreatown

The DSA-LA Political Education Committee is proud to present a new original study series exploring the transformation of Los Angeles from an openly pro-business, "open shop" town to a “union town” in which organized labor is an influential force in local politics. How did that shift occur? Who drove this political change? And how should socialists navigate our current political landscape to build a base for our politics among the Los Angeles working class?

Through historical record and primary sources, we will analyze this history and how it laid the groundwork for what our chapter identifies as the "Status Quo Coalition." You can RSVP for the classes below. While each class builds on themes from the previous class, they are also designed so that attendees can also join later classes.

  • The Making of the Los Angeles Working Class [Saturday, March 22nd @ 11am in-person in Koreatown]

  • Rise of the Latino-Labor Alliance [Thursday, April 3rd @ 6:30pm on Zoom]

  • The Status Quo Entrenches [Wednesday, April 16th @ 6:30pm on Zoom]

  • Municipal Power, Politics, and Struggle in Los Angeles: A Panel Discussion [Saturday, April 26th in-person]
