“Lobbying 101”

Is there an issue that moves you,
That you know is worth your time?
One that could affect your family,
Or cost much more than a dime?

Go lobby your legislator,
He or she does work for you!
Bring a friend as moderator,
And explain to them the cues.

Prepare yourselves in advance,
Know the topic through and through,
Learn helpful tips to enhance,
The information you can prove.

Wear a smile that shows respect,
And dress appropriately.
Your demeanor will project,
Your confidence ornately.

Bring a short list of the reasons,
Pros and cons of the topic.
Be sure each is in season,
And they follow good logic.

Be on time for the appointment,
But be patient when you wait.
Be pleasant with the assistant,
Busy people often run late.

Know the times and the schedules,
Of each committee in the mix.
Know who’s opinion and counsel,
Could help you suggest a fix.

Speak from your heart top concerns,
It’s your personal persuader.
The listener will discern,
That you’re not a sly invader.

Have your script in mind and ready,
With pertinent arguments.
Always keep your nerves steady,
And end with cordial compliments.

Build a coalition of votes,
That will move the proceeding.
Always send a thank you note,
And speak blessings as you’re leaving.
