The orcas who live in and near Puget Sound have been in crisis for years. Without enough salmon, they're starving to death. New calves are frequently malnourished and unable to survive to adulthood.
And now DOGE has taken a chainsaw to the agency helping orcas recover, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. News reports say at least 700 NOAA employees have already been fired and 1,000 more could be cut this week.
One fired staffer was named NOAA Fisheries' employee of the year two years ago. She was once on call for 42 straight days preventing orcas from swimming into oily waters after a fishing boat sank.
This rapid expulsion of dedicated experts from the agency clearly hampers its ability to protect marine life like critically endangered whales, sharks, sea turtles and corals.
The secret operations of DOGE are a direct danger to wildlife and the system that has worked for years to stave off tragic losses.
That's why the Center just took legal action — again — to expose the inner workings of DOGE. This marks our fourth legal fight to protect the wild from Musk and co.
The public must see how our oceans, coastlines and marine wildlife are being put at risk.
