“ICE arrests over 640 in Houston, says most accused of crimes,” Houston Chronicle's Matt deGrood — “More than 640 people allegedly in the country without permission — 550 of which were accused of crimes — were arrested in the Houston area [ [link removed] ] during an operation that began in late February, federal officials said Monday.
The arrests came as part of a targeted operation between Feb. 23 and March 2 meant to help public safety and national and border security, according to a spokesperson for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The dates coincide with a deportation in Colony Ridge [ [link removed] ] that began with an announcement [ [link removed] ] by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.
“These collective efforts have made our local communities significantly safer and strengthened our national security and border security,” said Chad Plantz, special agent in charge for Homeland Security Investigations in Houston, in a prepared statement.
Federal officials have been mostly mum about the specifics of their actions across the Houston region in recent weeks. In Monday’s announcement, they said federal investigators had executed 71 warrants and arrested more than 543 people accused of crimes and seven gang members as part of the operation. They did not identify the people arrested.
Agents made 646 arrests as part of the weeklong operation, officials said.
Officials allege those arrested included 140 people charged with or convicted of homicide, aggravated assault or domestic violence; 34 charged or convicted of a sex offense; 38 convicted of illegal firearms offenses; 52 charged or convicted of narcotics offenses; 51 charged with or convicted of property crimes; and 93 charged with or convicted of driving while intoxicated.
Monday’s announcement did not explain how investigators know the seven arrested were gang members.
The number of arrests includes almost 100 that weren’t in the list of those charged with crimes. President Donald Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, said ahead of the November election that the administration might target employers that hire workers in the country without permission. He said those businesses might face severe fines and their employees deported." Houston Chronicle [ [link removed] ] ($)
