Dear Friends,
Because of your caring generosity, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has fought for whales, sharks, turtles and other ocean wildlife, tackled illegal industrial fishing practices, and helped establish and protect marine sanctuaries across the globe. Over the last year, we conducted 33 direct-action campaigns for the oceans— our most active period ever.
While the COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on many over the last several months, it has created the perfect cover for lawlessness and poaching around the globe. With economies suffering, we anticipate a surge in opportunistic illegal poaching. Sea Shepherd has used this time to ready our vessels and crew and we are coming back stronger than ever to stop these illegal activities!

Saving The Vaquita Porpoise In Mexico’s Gulf of California, Sea Shepherd removed more than 1,000 illegal gillnets over the last six years. Gillnets are meant to kill the endangered totoaba sea bass, desired for their swim bladders that are worth up to $100,000 a kilogram on the black market.
The vaquita, the smallest porpoise in the world, lives only in the waters of the northernmost tip of the Gulf of California — one of the most biologically diverse bodies of water on the planet. To save the vaquita, Mexico placed a moratorium on gillnet fishing. The vaquitas are easily trapped in these gillnets. Unable to surface for air, they drown. Learn more at seashepherd.org/milagro As overexploited fisheries collapsed in other parts of the world, foreign fishing fleets started coming to waters of African countries to take advantage of their rich fishing grounds. The economic resources of many of these countries are stretched to address the IUU fishing.
That’s why Sea Shepherd must ensure that we are ready to directly combat these threats. In fact, our vessels and crews are preparing M/Y Bob Barker and M/Y Sam Simon for the waters off West Africa, which is plagued by illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
