If a long-term CR becomes law, it would provide none of the usual detailed instructions to the executive branch on how to spend federal funds. This would essentially give the Administration a blank check and allow them to make unilateral changes. It would give officials months to defund and destroy programs that support sustainable and regenerative businesses and programs that help keep communities healthy. This outcome could spell disaster for small and medium, local and sustainable businesses. A long-term CR will be the loudest and last signal that Congress has completely ceded control of the “power of the purse,” critically undermining the separation of powers that has been a benchmark of our Democracy.
Time is of the essence. Our collective business voice must be raised as soon as possible. If the House passes a long-term CR this week, Senators MUST NOT vote to adopt it, no matter what.
The possibility of a partial government shutdown over the weekend is real, but the consequences of Congress ceding its power to the Executive branch and surrendering while the economy crashes and our prosperity teeters are far more devastating to consider.
Please take action today and tomorrow to call your Representative and your two Senators' DC offices and deliver this important message: the business voice urges you to preserve Congressional independence and vote NO on a long-term Continuing Resolution, no matter what.
