There is a new bill in the Ohio House of Representatives that proposes a new State Issued Digital ID which is causing some concerns. While the bill originally was going to allow the Digital State ID to be used for Voting, that has been stripped from the bill, but doing so did not alleviate all remaining conservative concerns:
Key Issues with HB78 and
Digital ID Implementation
- Lack of Government Oversight & Transparency – No public access to records due to private third-party contracts.
- No Security or Privacy Standards – No mandated consumer protection for biometric data storage and use by private vendors.
- No Oversight of Private Vendors – Third-party vendors (e.g., BMV & AAMVA) operate without public accountability.
- No Vendor Liability – No disclosure requirements for data breaches, compromises, or theft of personal information.
- Risk of Data Interception – No guarantees that biometric data transmission won’t be intercepted by compromised telecom or internet systems.
