The two Newark police officers were shot around 6:37 p.m. in the area of Broadway and Carteret. They "didn't even get a chance to step out of the vehicle before he was shot," officials said. A 14-year-old boy and four others are now in custody. Both cops were taken to University Hospital, where 26-year-old Officer Joseph Azcona, a five-year-veteran of the force, was pronounced dead. Azcona's family and five brothers were by his side when he died Saturday morning, and he was posthumously promoted to detective. The other officer is in critical condition, and his name has not yet been released. Police are now trying to determine why a 14-year-old boy had a gun and thought he could use it against the police. He was charged with murder and attempted murder and suffered non-life threatening injuries. FOX 11 18-year-old shot to death during attempted robbery in South Los Angeles An 18-year-old man is dead after four other men tried to rob him in South Los Angeles, authorities said. The incident happened Saturday at the intersection of Florence and Western avenues near the Burger Palace. The four suspects approached the victim and demanded his property, but he refused to give it to them, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. That's when one of the suspects shot him. The victim, whose name has not been released, was taken to a hospital where he later died. The suspects got away in a car. A description of the vehicle was not available. Police said the incident doesn't appear to be gang-related. ABC 7 Man fatally shoots brother who was choking 80-year-old mother in Beverly Grove, police say A man fatally shot his older brother after witnessing him choke their 80-year-old mother in her home in Beverly Grove, police say. The Los Angeles Police Department responded to the shooting at around 1:25 p.m. Friday in the 400 block of North Alfred Street. According to LAPD Officer Norma Eisenman, the dispute began when a 61-year-old man used a baseball bat to damage windows and personal belongings in his mother’s home and threatened her. The woman then called her 57-year-old son, who police said arrived to find his mother being choked by his older brother. The younger son used a shotgun to fire a warning shot, but the choking continued. Police said the 57-year-old “felt he had no other choice but to shoot his brother to save his mother’s life.” According to Eisenman, the shooting is a “justifiable homicide, not a criminal homicide” and the younger son was not booked. Neither his nor his brother’s names were released. Los Angeles Times Man accused in violent West L.A. rape attempt facing life in state prison A 33-year-old man is facing the possibility of life in prison for an alleged violent rape attempt of a 63-year-old woman, attacking a toddler and residential burglary late last month, officials announced. The terrifying Feb. 27 incident unfolded just before 12:30 p.m. in the West Los Angeles neighborhood of Sawtelle. In a news release, prosecutors with L.A. County District Attorney’s Office said Ishmail Bangura attacked a 3-year-old child inside one apartment before entering the apartment of a 63-year-old woman who he reportedly sexually assaulted. Bangura, who witnesses said was nude during the violent ordeal, was pulled off the woman by a group of construction workers working on a site in the 2400 block of Barry Avenue near the 10 Freeway who heard the victim’s screams for help. “Part of you freezes and thinks, ‘Is this really happening right now?’ And then part of you just knows, ‘We gotta go help her,’” Rick Dreyfus, a general contractor who assisted in the rescue, told KTLA. KTLA 5 Los Feliz church targeted by alleged arsonist on Ash Wednesday An investigation is underway after a Catholic church in Los Feliz was targeted by an alleged arsonist on Ash Wednesday. The incident happened at Our Mother of Good Counsel, located in the 2000 block of Vermont Avenue at around 10 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department. By the time officers arrived, the suspect had already fled the scene. Photos shared on the church's Instagram account show multiple burned pews, a scorched pillar and shattered stained glass windows. In response to the incident, members of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles shared a statement. "Any act of vandalism on a house of worship is concerning and disheartening," the statement said. "Our Mother of Good Counsel Catholic Community has been faithfully serving parishioners in the Los Angeles area for 100 years. Our prayers are with the Mother of Good Counsel parish community." CBS 2 Inmate walks away from reentry program facility in LA, prompting search Authorities were searching for an incarcerated man who walked away from a Male Community Reentry Program facility Sunday. Just before 3 p.m. Sunday, officials were alerted that 45-year-old Herber Ramosrauda had walked away from the facility, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation stated. Ramosrauda was described as a 5 feet, 6 inches tall Hispanic man, weighing about 160 pounds, with a light complexion, black hair and brown eyes. Authorities believe his last known location was in the area of Wilshire Boulevard and South Bonnie Brae Street in Westlake. He was last seen wearing a gray sweater, gray pants and a gray-and-red backpack. Ramosrauda was serving a three-year sentence for second-degree robbery and was received from Los Angeles County on May 13, 2024, according to the CDCR. ABC 7 Suspected cocaine trafficker indicted on Narco-Terrorism charge in SoCal A suspected international cocaine trafficker known as “Araña” was indicted Friday by a federal grand jury on a new count of Narco-Terrorism, announced the United States Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of California. The indictment is against 43-year-old Geovany Andres Rojas, who is a Colombian national. It’s a superseding one, adding a second charge to the previous count of International Conspiracy to Distribute Cocaine. Rojas is alleged to have played a major role in a drug trafficking network operating across Colombia, Ecuador and other locations. He is accused of conspiring to distribute cocaine with full knowledge that the narcotics would be unlawfully imported into the United States, the attorney’s office explained. The new charge of Narco-Terrorism alleges that Rojas knowingly provided financial support or resources to individuals and organizations involved in terrorist activities. KTLA 5 Video: Injured Texas officer rescues DUI driver from burning vehicle A Rowlett police officer pulled an intoxicated driver from his burning vehicle moments after he struck the officer’s patrol car early Thursday, according to a video of the incident. The officer was assisting Garland police with traffic control on Interstate 30 when the crash occurred, according to a statement from the Rowlett Police Department. After his patrol vehicle was struck from behind, the officer got out and immediately approached the suspect’s car, according to the statement. When the officer noticed the driver was not responding, he broke the window with his elbow and dragged the man to safety, according to the statement. Both the driver and the officer were transported to the hospital, officials said. The officer was released later Thursday morning and the driver remains in the hospital. The driver has been charged with intoxication assault, according to the statement. Fort Worth Star-Telegram Public Safety News Man dead, firefighter burned in Hyde Park house fire A 50-year-old man who was trapped inside a burning Hyde Park house Saturday was hospitalized and later died from his injuries. The fire was reported at 6:55 p.m. Saturday at 7032 S. Fourth Ave., according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Lyndsey Lantz. The fire was out in 22 minutes. A firefighter suffered minor injuries putting out the blaze. "First arriving companies reported a one-story single-family dwelling with heavy fire inside two rooms,'' Lantz said. "Following reports of a person trapped, firefighters rescued a single victim." The cause of the fire was under investigation. NBC 4 Alleged trespasser in critical condition after possible electrocution at Northridge Hospital An alleged trespasser was hospitalized in critical condition on Sunday after they were electrocuted at Northridge Hospital, according to firefighters. It happened just after 4:45 p.m. on the hospital property, located in the 18000 block of W. Cantara Street, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Crews arrived and found the 30-year-old man suffering from "significant burn injuries over 50% of his body due to contact with an electrical vault atop a generator," the LAFD statement said. They say that the person was not a hospital employee, but did not provide further information on their identity, only that "it appears to be trespassing." At the latest paramedics said the man was in critical condition. CBS 2 Fire in Westlake Apartment Building Knocked Down A fire in a two-story center hall apartment building in Westlake was knocked down Sunday. Flames and heavy smoke was reported emerging from the second floor and attic of the building in the 600 block of South Carondelet Street, near Seventh Street, around 6:35 p.m. Sunday, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. More than six dozen firefighters extinguished the fire in less than 25 minutes, the LAFD stated. One building directly threatened by the flames was defended from damage. Authorities reported no injuries, stating the building appeared to be unoccupied. MyNewsLA Earthquake Felt Throughout LA County; Estimated at 4.2-Magnitude A magnitude-4.1 earthquake occurred Sunday about 7.7 miles northwest of Malibu, rattling nerves across Los Angeles County. The quake struck at 1:03 p.m. at a depth of about 7.2 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was followed by a series of aftershocks in the same general area, estimated at magnitudes of 2.5, 3.0 and 2.8, the USGS reported. No damage was immediately reported. The Los Angeles Fire Department's Margaret Stewart told City News Service that the temblor was not significant enough to activate the department's earthquake mode. Westside Current Southern California firefighter dies from job-related cancer A 32-year-old Southern California firefighter lost his battle with job-related cancer on Friday.“With deep sorrow, the Ventura County Fire Department announces the line of duty death of Engineer Thomas “Tommy” James Daniel Minadeo at the age of 32,” said the department in a release. VCFD said Minadeo was diagnosed with cancer last October and had been undergoing treatment. “Tommy was part of our fire family for nearly 10 years, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with us in response to our community’s public safety needs,” Fire Chief Dustin Gardner said. “We now stand with Tommy’s family in grieving his passing and supporting each other.” Minadeo started his journey with VCFD in 2015 when he joined as a fire control worker. Then, two years later, Minadeo graduated from Academy 54 and was hired as a firefighter.
