Voices from Gaza and from Syria
With Ahed al Hendi and Hadeel Oueis, of the Center for Peace Communications
Date: February 19, 2025
Time: 12 o’clock Noon
As Israel has fought to dismantle much of Hamas’s infrastructure in Gaza, and the international community is evaluating President Trump’s plan, many in the foreign policy world have been wondering what the population itself in Gaza believes. Although the totalitarian terrorist regime of Hamas, which remains in control of the population, has placed a sealed blockage of communication around the true feelings of the inhabitants, Ahed and Hadeel work for an organization that has been able to send people into Gaza and document their actual feelings. They have created a platform for voices that otherwise would have been silenced, and unknown to the outside world.
Beyond that, both Ahed and Hadeel are two Syrian refugees who had been imprisoned and tortured by the regime of Bashir al Assad for initiating a secular, anti-regime student organization. Come and listen to what they experienced under the former Syrian regime, and their actual assessment of Hayat Tahrir al Sham and the regime of Ahmed al-Sharaa, (Mohammad al-Jolani). Ahed is a senior fellow for the Center for Peace Communications, has written for Foreign Affairs, and has worked for the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, and Voice of America. Hadeel Oueis is a writer and journalist focusing on the Middle East and is a research fellow at the Philos Project. She majored in political studies and in 2011, at the age of 18, was arrested by the Assad regime for playing a key role in the early days of Syrian protests. In 2012, the United States delegation in Geneva met with Oueis and helped her relocate to the United States. She currently analyzes U.S. policies in the Middle East for major
Arabic networks. Oueis reported for years through the @JIMENA platform about Sephardic and Mizrahi Jews and has been an active voice in calling for peace in the Middle East.
