Presidents Day is a holiday with deep roots in American history.
In the 1800s, communities across the country celebrated George Washington's Birthday<[link removed]> each year on February 22nd. In 1879, this tradition was officially recognized<[link removed]> as a federal holiday.
Later, in 1968, Congress passed a law moving the observance <[link removed]>to the third Monday in February. The holiday evolved into Presidents Day, a day to honor all of America’s presidents and their contributions to our nation.
