We are going to get through the coronavirus outbreak together. If you are experiencing symptoms or are looking for more information, you can visit the website of the CDC or the Illinois Department of Health. We are closely monitoring the situation and its effects on the people of Illinois and our nation as we work together to keep our families and communities safe.
I am heartbroken to witness another black family lose their loved one to police brutality. Our communities have every right to be infuriated. Black Americans have suffered through 400 years of intergenerational trauma. Whether it’s slavery, lynching, or modern-day Jim Crow policies -- black communities are bearing the brunt of institutional racism. Enough is enough. Police brutality and the dehumanization of black and brown lives must be addressed by our leaders and law enforcement agencies. We have a responsibility to call out racism and take action. It should not fall on our black brothers and sisters. We must speak out. Silence is not an option. Silence condones racism. Silence kills. Right now, we must start by calling for any police officers who resort to excessive use of force to be charged and convicted for any crimes committed. Now more than ever, we must unite against hate. We must stand up and fight for the decriminalization of our black communities. We must take on mass incarceration, ending cash bail, mandatory minimums, harsh sentencing, solitary confinement, banning the box, and more. Black lives matter. ¡Si se Puede! Rep. Chuy Garcia |
