Dear John,
Click here to take action to urge Congress to protect the integrity of the federal civil service.
Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have been on the job for less than two months, but the early results are nothing short of disastrous. A series of airplane safety incidents. Cancelled appointments at the VA. Long lines outside national parks. Abandoned medical research. And, through it all, an overriding sense that the world’s richest man is using his power over Donald Trump to steal from the public coffers and enrich himself.
To create a more efficient and effective federal government, the first thing we should do is fire Elon Musk and close his DOGE. If Congress does so, 2.3 million federal workers – people who actually understand what the government does – stand ready to help the administration root out waste and build a more perfect union.
AFGE categorically condemns the administration’s unconstitutional and unlawful refusal to spend funds that are already legally committed to USAID, the Education Department, and many other programs that provide vital services to the American people.
AFGE is deeply concerned that the administration has superseded duly enacted acts of Congress with edicts of the U.S. DOGE Service, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) that are causing havoc at federal agencies and in the civil service.
Since its founding in 1932, AFGE has worked with presidents and legislators of both parties to ensure that the civil service serves the American people without fear or favor to any party, person, or interest.
AFGE calls on Congress to immediately fire Elon Musk and defund DOGE as it has exceeded its non-existent statutory authority and pursued an agenda contrary to that of its predecessor agency, the U.S. Digital Service.
Elon Musk’s DOGE has shown complete disdain for any actual elimination of waste, fraud or abuse. Instead, DOGE has arrogantly sought to destroy the ability of federal agencies to deliver services to the American people and ruin the careers of patriotic civil servants devoted to public service. Likewise, its disregard for the Constitutional role of the United States Congress reveals in stark terms that DOGE’s goal is to incapacitate, not to improve executive branch agencies.
The civil servants who dedicate their lives to serving this nation deserve respect, not persecution. The American people deserve a government that functions efficiently and fairly. Congress must act now to protect both.
