Friend,

President’s Day has taken a whole new meaning for me since I’ve joined Congress.

I regularly walk into the Capitol rotunda and sit by myself at night – right next to the statue of Abraham Lincoln, who also served Illinois in the House of Representatives. In fact, the 17th District overlaps with the district that he served. (How cool is that?)

Sometimes I sit for a few minutes. Sometimes I need an hour or more. The silence of this building has a lot to say if you take the time to listen.

Not a day goes by that I don’t reflect on the honor of having your trust – for decades as your Meteorologist, looking out for families in bad weather, and now as a Representative of my home state and for my hometown.

Abe understood that a House divided could not stand, and he also understood that we could not simply give into persecution of entire groups to keep a false peace. He chose the hardest path, because it was the only true path forward for our country’s prosperity.

While it’s not lost on me that the politics of hate and division have taken over the White House, I believe the light of tomorrow is brighter. I will never stop believing that our best days are when we work together to solve problems, not scapegoat and target those without a voice, or evoke fear over our differences.

I didn’t think it was possible, but each day I’m prouder and prouder to be from the Land of Lincoln and represent Illinois’ 17th District in Congress. And I believe, like Honest Abe, that we will solve real issues with relationships and hard work.

Happy Birthday, Mr. President. As long as I’m trusted to serve IL-17, I will always abide by your lessons.

- Eric
