John,
As we observe Presidents’ Day, it is important that we reflect on the values that have long defined the office of the President of the United States — values of service, humility, and dedication to the American people. From Lincoln to Carter to Biden, the common thread among these leaders has always been a commitment to put the welfare of the nation above partisan agendas and self-interest. It is that spirit of service that has upheld the promise of justice and democracy.
Sadly, under the current administration, we have seen a stark departure from these ideals. Instead of leading with a heart dedicated to the American people, President Donald Trump has prioritized petty grudges and divisive rhetoric that undermines the principles of our democracy. His actions have not been about lifting up the nation or advancing the common good, but about advancing his own narrow interests.
Tyranny is not the language of a democracy. A president is not above the law, nor should they be allowed to abandon the checks and balances that our Constitution so carefully established. The very idea that the executive branch should be unaccountable to the courts and the people, as J.D. Vance has suggested, is an affront to everything our founding fathers fought for.
On this Presidents’ Day, I call on President Donald Trump to rise above his personal grievances and govern in a manner befitting the office. It is time for him to lay aside the tantrums and petty feuds. Join me by adding your name to this petition >>
Sincerely,
Chris Coons
