John

On this President’s Day, we wanted to remind you of a few things about President Donald Trump:

He’s an insurrectionist. He’s a convicted felon. And he has *plenty* of problems with the Constitution.

Just take a look at this headline:

New York Times: Trump Muses About a Third Term, Over and Over Again

Just this week, Trump said “they say I can’t run again; that’s the expression.”

Let’s be clear: It’s not an expression—it’s the law. The 22nd Amendment limits the number of terms a person can be elected president to two. So no matter what Donald Trump—or anyone else—says, he is not eligible to be elected to a third term.

But this is far from the first time that Trump has blatantly ignored or violated the Constitution.

In fact, he violated the Constitution his very first day in office during his first term.

That’s because he violated the Constitution’s Emoluments Clauses, which mandate that the president cannot receive profits, gains or advantages, beyond his official compensation, from the federal government, foreign governments or the individual states.

The framers of our Constitution didn’t want a president’s loyalty to be compromised by their personal financial interest.

But Trump refused to divest from his businesses before taking office in 2017—and again this year—putting him in direct violation of the Constitution.

Just as he began his first term breaking the law, he ended it the same way—by inciting a violent insurrection at the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution says that people who swore an oath to the Constitution then engage in insurrection are disqualified from serving in public office. That’s why we sued to remove Donald Trump from the ballot.

Despite what Donald Trump may believe, the Constitution is not optional. CREW will continue to fight to hold Donald Trump accountable to the Constitution, and we need your help to do it. Make a donation to CREW today to support our work to hold Trump accountable →
