I know that it feels like our country is falling apart at the seams.

100,000 dead from a pandemic that could have been prevented. Protests turning violent, touched off by another innocent African-American being murdered in cold blood, this time by a police officer. And a President who refuses to bring the country together -- instead urging his supporters to shoot protesters and wishing his political opponents dead.

I'm an eternal optimist, but even I feel the weight of this moment. But it's at those low points that I remember the genius of our nation. What exists today is unacceptable -- a society in which people of color face economic barriers and threats of violence that have no comparison for white Americans. The gut-wrenching video of George Floyd's death is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the experience of Black Americans.

But the genius of our nation is that we need not accept anything as inevitable. Creating a radical change in the social structure of our country so that people of color are no longer caught in a closed circuit of marginality will not be easy. No, it will be difficult. It will involve changing minds, changing living patterns, changing laws, and changing who wins elections.

But right now, we really only have two choices.

We can give up because that change is too hard and too likely to fail. Or we can come together, create a new plan to achieve that change, and do our best to get it done. I'm fortunate to be in a position of political leadership, and I intend to choose the latter option and step up my efforts to build a more just society. And I'm lucky to have supporters like you who are willing to help in this endeavor.

There are going to be many hard days ahead, as we lurch into the second half of 2020. The epidemic is not defeated. The pain and protests are not done. But we can start now to make sure the people who will help lead this change have the support they need to step to the forefront.

That's why I'm encouraging you to click the link below and give a small donation to one of the social and racial justice groups working right now to lead us out of this moment of crisis and into a process that can start righting wrongs. Whatever you can give will make a difference. I'm making a donation today.

This is a fulcrum moment for our nation. And I'm thankful that you've put me in a position to make sure we come out stronger on the other side.

Every best wish,

Chris
