Folks, we’re about a month into the second Trump term, and so far, it’s a chaotic, lawless mess.
Already a convicted felon, Trump continues to act like he’s above the law. He’s directly violating the U.S. Constitution. He’s empowering an unelected billionaire to access Americans’ sensitive data and shut down critical programs. And he’s sowing discrimination, hate, and lies at every turn.
So what are Democrats doing about all this?
I’m glad you asked. It’s true that we’re in the minority in both the House and Senate, and frankly, there aren’t as many options as I would like for Members of Congress to push back. But that doesn’t mean we’re standing by and doing nothing – so let me tell you what I’ve been up to this past week:
* I introduced a bill to protect USAID, called the Protect U.S. National Security Act . It would prevent government funds from being used to eliminate USAID and affirms that only an act of Congress can shut down the agency. You can read more about my legislation here. [[link removed]]
* I highlighted the dangers of eliminating USAID in our House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, making sure it’s in the Congressional record that shutting down this agency would put Americans at risk and actually increase the potential for fraud, waste, and abuse. You can watch my remarks here. [[link removed]]
* I sent a letter to Secretary Pete Hegseth, signed by all of the Democratic women on the House Armed Services Committee, demanding answers on why military sexual assault trainings have been paused – with no explanation or timeline for resuming. You can read more about that letter here. [[link removed]]
* I led the charge with more than 40 of my colleagues in pushing to reverse Trump’s transgender military ban, which is not only discriminatory but detrimental to our military readiness and recruitment efforts. You can read more about that letter here. [[link removed]]
* I delivered a speech on the House floor condemning my colleagues for simultaneously preaching about Congress’s importance while allowing unelected billionaire Elon Musk to hijack our constitutionally dictated power of the purse.
During this work within Congress, Democrats continue to partner with outside organizations to support legal action against the Trump Administration – and we’re seeing real successes from our efforts.
Already, the Administration has been ordered to pause their unconstitutional funding freeze, the slashing of scientific research funded through the National Institutes of Health, and the sidelining of thousands of USAID staff. And judicial action is being taken on everything from Trump’s executive order eliminating birthright citizenship to Elon Musks’ entire DOGE operation.
I know things feel overwhelming right now – and I understand the immense frustration so many are feeling about the Trump Administration’s onslaught of orders and the seemingly minimal power Democrats have to stop any of them.
But I can promise you two things:
1. I am doing every single thing in my power to fight back. I am not sitting idly by watching all of this without exploring every legislative tool possible to stop it.
2. We are gearing up for a fight in 2026 to take back the House so we can mount a true opposition to this extreme Administration.
I’ll continue to update you on this work, and I’m so grateful for your support. Democrats need to stick together now more than ever before – so thank you.
Sincerely,
Sara
