Yá étééh John,
My name is Tara Benally, and I’m one of Stewardship Utah’s San Juan County Organizers. I grew up in southern San Juan County, Utah, and am of Hopi descent. The Diné (Navajo) Bítahníí clan (Folded Arms People) raised my family, and I was born to the Diné clan Nitłachíí (Marks on the Cheek People).
Over the past seven years, I have had the privilege of connecting with local community members and witnessing the incredible passion of grassroots leaders—individuals who understand the challenges we face because they experience them every day. I wholeheartedly encourage our community members of all ages to explore leadership training, as it can help them unlock their potential and reveal the talents that may be waiting to be discovered. With their unique lived experiences, they possess a powerful voice and a wonderful opportunity to inspire transformative change in the political landscape for the Dine communities they reside in. Together, we can create a brighter future.
We are partnering with the League of Conservation Voters to host a three-part webinar series focusing on creating change and empowering your community. From advocacy and lobbying to becoming a civil servant, there are many ways we can create a Utah that represents us. Join us for one, or all, of these free webinars to learn more about how we can empower our communities:

The first step to making change is understanding the tools available. During a legislative training in Monument Valley, we went over the Navajo-English Election Glossary and worked to bring more tools to my community.
This webinar series will culminate in a two-day, in-person, free training event on running for office. This intensive training will take place in Moab, UT on April 5 & 6, 2025, with experienced trainers from across the Conservation Voters Movement and Stewardship Utah, which will give participants a chance to practice newly-learned skills during the training.

* Gain the skills to run effective campaigns , from crafting fundraising plans to learning about volunteer recruitment and working with the media, and will have the chance to practice what they learn–like delivering stump speeches, fundraising pitches, and more.
* Meet monthly with trainers and one another following the training to receive coaching on issues they face as they develop their plans.
* Devote time to building strong relationships with the idea that they will need each other to get elected and after the election. Trusting relationships are key to real accountability and effective governance!
