** Philip Vance’s fight for freedom continues as source claims he’s not the true killer in the murder he was convicted
------------------------------------------------------------
Serving a life sentence for a deadly robbery in South St. Paul in 2002, Philip Vance ([link removed]) has continually attested to his innocence. Since his conviction, he’s been exhausting all legal options to get another chance in court to prove he’s been wrongfully convicted.
After waiting years for Minnesota’s Conviction Review Unit (CRU) to finalize their investigation on his case, Vance’s legal team filed a new petition for postconviction relief with newly acquired evidence proving his innocence last week. Read the petition here ([link removed]) (pdf).

The day after the motion was filed, the Dakota County Attorney’s Office got a judge to sign off for them to delay their response to the petition until the CRU has released their review of Vance’s case. The Feb. 28 filing notes that “both parties have been informed that the CRU has nearly completed its work reviewing Petitioner’s conviction and that a final report is expected soon.” Vance and his legal team deny they’ve been informed of any such thing by the CRU and Vance’s last meeting with them was in March 2024. Stay tuned for further updates in Vance’s case from Unicorn Riot.

A short time before Vance filed his newest petition, an anonymous source came forward with new details supporting Vance’s claims of innocence. Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source, who’s had contact with the alleged killer’s accomplice, told Unicorn Riot they know who killed Al-Bakri, and it’s not Philip Vance. Since UR couldn’t independently verify the claim and have yet to contact the alleged killer to get a statement, we are not publishing the name at this time. See the full story ([link removed]) .

“I just want the world to know that I am innocent,” Philip Vance said from a prison phone on the 22nd anniversary of the robbery-turned-murder for which Vance is convicted and serving a life sentence. Listening to Vance were members of the press and a dozen Free Philip Vance team volunteers who braved frigid temperatures to hold a press conference. See our coverage below ([link removed]) .
