Hello from the State Capitol,

 

Should athletes who were born as boys be prevented from playing in girls sporting events?

 

A bill that would prevent this from happening was debated on the House floor recently.

 

Specifically, the House bill states that only students of the female sex may participate in an elementary or secondary school athletic team or sport that an educational institution has restricted on the basis of sex to women or girls.

 

This bill does nothing to stop kids from going out for a sports team. But it does keep biological boys from participating in girls’ competitions.

 

Despite 80% of the public supporting this language, not one House Democrat supported it. Keep in mind, girls across the nation are getting hurt and losing opportunities due to boys playing on girls’ teams. Every Republican voted yes on this common sense bill, but since 68 votes are needed to pass a bill and we only have 67, the proposal did not pass.

 

After some procedural moves, the bill could once again be debated again on the House floor at a later date.

 

*MINNESOTA’S BUDGET OUTLOOK WORSENS*

A look to the future shows Minnesota’s economic condition is headed for a cliff.

 

Our state’s fiscal experts provided a roadmap for the rest of session. For this coming budget cycle, Minnesota’s projected surplus has shrunk to $456 million. In December, a $616 million surplus was projected.

 

In December, a $5.1 billion deficit had been projected for the 2028-29 budget cycle. Now that number has worsened, standing at $6 billion, which approaches the largest deficit ever recorded in our state’s history.

 

To think, just two years ago an all Democrat-led government was handed an $18 billion budget surplus. They blew it, raised taxes by another $10 billion besides, and grew government spending by nearly 40%. Anyone with a shred of common sense could see a deficit on the horizon. Do not accept the attempts by Democrats to somehow blame this on President Trump. Democrats own this state deficit.

 

*HAVE A DRINK WITH YOUR HAIRCUT*

A local salon owner brought a good idea forward recently and I have turned it into legislation. The bill would allow cosmetology salons to apply for a liquor license in their city. This would allow someone to have a drink while getting their hair or nails done. I’ll soon have another bill that would offer cigar bars the same option.

 

To me, it’s a win-win situation as it would create increased tax revenue for the state while providing participating businesses with another revenue stream.
