Recently, Congress passed a budget resolution that establishes the broad blueprint for mandatory spending (not to be confused with discretionary spending — think of appropriations bills when you hear the term “discretionary"), revenues as well as deficit and debt levels for fiscal years 2026 through 2034.
The narrative Democrats are putting out regarding cuts to Medicaid for current beneficiaries is completely false. The reality is our entitlement (also called mandatory) programs are filled with a tremendous amount of waste, fraud, and abuse. For example, over the past ten years, state Medicaid programs sent out $567 billion in improper payments. It is this waste, fraud, and abuse that will be the focus of scrutiny. Benefits to those Americans who legitimately rely on this safety net program will not be cut.
This is Republican's first step in cutting out fraud, waste, and abuse from the federal budget, becoming energy dominate again, and making permanent key tax cut provisions critical to economic growth that are set to expire. The American people voted overwhelmingly for these agenda items by electing President Trump.
There's more work to be done, but House Republicans are determined to send a bill to President Trump's desk that reins in the reckless spending we saw the past four years.
Key Numbers:
- Requires $1.5 trillion in mandatory savings over 10 years
- Provides up to $300 billion for border security and defense
- Provides $4.5 trillion for the Ways and Means Committee to prevent tax hikes and deliver on President Trump's tax priorities
