John–
When I think about Black History Month, I look back to the Black leaders who have fought the good fight for our progress: Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr. are two people who I've looked up to for inspiration and encouragement, especially during my involvement with Students Demand Action. Their commitment to peace and patience, along with their passion to fight for equality, are powerful attributes I try my best to embody.
Black History Month is a time to honor and remember the achievements and resilience of our Black communities throughout history while also recognizing the challenges we still face today.
As someone of both African American and Ethiopian heritage, I love seeing the beautiful interconnections among the cultures within the Black community.
And as much as I love how far we've come, I can't help but also acknowledge that there are still many obstacles to overcome.
Gun violence disproportionately affects Black communities compared to non-Black communities.
After years of seeing the trauma caused by gun violence among my peers and in communities across the country, I wanted to feel like a part of the solution. That's why I joined Students Demand Action.
There are thousands of Students and Moms Demand Action volunteers like me and like you fighting to create a future free from gun violence. For us, for our Black communities, and for future generations, John, will you join us?
Black youth are disproportionately affected by gun violence, so it makes it that much more important to have Black voices like mine in this movement. Having more Black voices in our movement builds power, power to build on the progress we deserve. Being in this movement has taught me so much about how I can use my voice and my background to get more students involved.
Seeing how much this movement has grown, and seeing how many Black students are already involved fills me with so much hope. Despite adversity, we are in this together, and just like our Black leaders and communities in the past, we are making a difference and we will create change.
Join our movement and help create a future free from gun violence for all of us.
Thank you for being in this movement,
Sabrina Moore
