Everything happening this week at DSA-LA

TOMORROW: Save Our Services Day of Action - Los Angeles

On February 19th, federal workers and everyday Americans are coming together to say NO to Elon Musk’s push to gut federal services and impose mass layoffs.

Our demands:

  • NO cuts to vital services
  • NO mass layoffs: respect union workers’ contracts
  • END the funding freeze

Join federal workers, unions, and community members rallying for a Save Our Services day of action at 300 N Los Angeles Federal Building! Parking is available at or near the Grand Park Train Station.

Wear red, white, and/or blue. Bring signs about how your community benefits from federal services. These are family-friendly events. All are welcome.

Abolish Rent Reading Group – Session 2

Thursday, February 20 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

***Location Currently TBD***

Join DSA LA’s Housing and Homelessness Committee for the next session of our Abolish Rent reading group, where we read this recently-published book about tenant organizing and the Los Angeles Tenants Union (LATU), by Tracy Rosenthal and Leonardo Vilchis. As socialists, we support working class organizing in all its forms, whether that be at our workplaces, in our communities, or in our homes, and we’re reading Abolish Rent to deepen our understanding of what that struggle on the terrain of housing and land use looks like. As we recover from the wildfires and suddenly find ourselves in a moment of rapid rent increases, price-gouging landlords, and increased homelessness and displacement of tenants, this book is more relevant than ever.

For this session, we will be reading Chapters 2 (pages 34 to 56). While we hope everyone reads this book, people who haven’t completed the reading for this section are encouraged to attend and participate. This group is open to anyone who is interested in discussing this book and tenant organizing in general, and is a good way to learn more about DSA LA’s Power to the Tenants Campaign and to hear more about the socialist vision for dignified and decommodified housing. If you still need to buy a copy of the book, you can buy a discounted copy through this link, but please let us know if you’re short on funds right now and can’t afford it!

K-12 Educators Happy Hour

Friday, February 21 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Join DSA-LA’s K-12 Labor Circle for a Happy Hour Social! Meet fellow democratic socialist educators and talk about what’s happening at our schools, in our unions, and how DSA should be getting involved. Our K-12 Labor Circle is a space for educators to meet and get involved in organizing in their schools. If you can’t make this event, come to our next regular meeting in March where we’ll discuss some upcoming contract fights and other issues around education in LA. Open to all people involved in K-12 education.

A Celebration of Black Socialist Organizing

Saturday, February 22 @ 1:00 pm

Join DSA-LA for a Black History Month community forum centered around the history of Black radical organizing! This community event will present information and facilitate discussion centered around a socialist perspective of the class struggle and its relationship to the fight for racial justice and Black liberation. We’ll also have food, a presentation on housing justice, and a blood pressure panel where you can get a free reading. This will be an opportunity to connect, learn, and celebrate!

DSA 101: Central Branch

Monday, February 24 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Are you new or newly returning to DSA? To Los Angeles? To the Left? Then join us for DSA 101!  At this orientation, we’ll talk about what capitalism is, how it functions, and why socialism is ideologically opposed to it. Participants will also learn about the history of our organization and our chapter in particular, the current projects we’re working on, and how you can get involved. This is not a lecture, but a meeting for new and veteran organizers to ground ourselves in socialist theory and discuss together how we can put it into action. We’re excited to chat with you! All are welcome! We’ll meet at Immanuel Presbyterian in Koreatown (3300 Wilshire Blvd). This location is accessible via bus and the Wilshire/Vermont Metro station. There’s also parking behind the building.

Mutual Aid Committee Meeting

Monday, February 24 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Join the Mutual Aid Committee for our twice-monthly committee meeting, where we’ll be discussing ongoing and upcoming committee work, as well as helping folks get plugged into other work throughout the city. New members always welcome! Please RSVP for meeting connection information. Mutual Aid Committee meetings are held on the second and fourth Monday of each month.
