GLAAD

Dear Friend,

Right now, our community is facing an urgent and painful reality.

This weekend, two devastating events highlighted the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ visibility and the right to live free from violence.

We learned of the heartbreaking murder of Sam Nordquist, a transgender man whose life was violently taken. The brutality of this crime underscores the real and dangerous violence that trans people face daily. It’s not just a tragic story—it’s an urgent call and demand every LGBTQ person must be able to live in safety and with dignity.

At the same time, the censors now controlling the National Park Service removed references to transgender people from the official history of the Stonewall National Monument website. This blatant act of erasure attempts to remove the truth of the LGBTQ movement and dishonors the immense contributions of transgender people, including transgender women of color, in the fight for LGBTQ rights.

These are not just headlines. They are a stark reflection of a society where transgender lives and history are constantly under threat.

At GLAAD, we are more committed than ever to ensuring these stories are told with the depth and respect they deserve. In less than 24 hours, GLAAD's News and Rapid Response staff worked with national and local media, along with the owners of the Stonewall Inn who organized a rally and protest that drew thousands of people to hold those accountable for daring to erase LGBTQ history. Nearly every local news station along with many national news outlets brought the story of our community's response around the world. We continue to hold The New York Times accountable for its irresponsible, biased, and inaccurate coverage of transgender people that has led to this dangerous moment in America. Just last week, we once again demanded that trans voices be heard and included in all coverage about trans lives. Our ALERT Desk is documenting the violence and harassment faced by our community nationwide, sharing this larger picture with media covering Sam’s murder and the Trump administration’s attempts to erase and intimidate us.

We aren’t backing down. No matter what happens, we will be out there fighting for truth, visibility, and justice—because the LGBTQ community deserves nothing less.

Thank you for standing with us in this fight. Your continued support fuels our vital work to fight for our community on the frontlines, ensure that LGBTQ history remains accurately recorded, amplify our voices so that they are heard, and protect our rights and progress.
