DEVELOPING… Trump has mandated that the Interior Department, which manages millions of acres of public land, review the protected status of national monument lands around the country.

The order applies to hundreds of monuments, with the end goal of offering up more public land for oil and gas leasing.

The deadline for that review is today. We are expecting imminent announcements from Trump’s Secretary of the Interior, and every national monument could be under threat, including places like Utah’s Bears Ears and Grand-Staircase Escalante.

We have a real chance at stopping them, but we need to move quickly. Here’s why:

  • Plans to open public lands to drilling are wildly unpopular among Democrats and Republicans alike.
  • Over 70 percent of Utah’s voters are in favor of keeping Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante as national monuments.
  • Eighty-five percent of Western voters believe we should have more of these protected places.

Momentum is growing to protect our public lands — even Republicans like Rep. Ryan Zinke have come out with strong opposition to selling off our public lands.

We’ve won fights like this before, and with enough of a public outcry, we can win here too. LCV’s policy teams are working in Washington, D.C., on efforts to coordinate that response with resistance in Congress. We’re calling on every LCV supporter right now — because the only way we have a shot at victory is if we make all our voices heard.

We can win these fights — I promise — but it’s going to take all of us. Thanks for all that you do, Friend. We’ll be in touch again soon.

Onward,
