John, You’ve seen the horrifying headlines: with Donald Trump’s blessing, Elon Musk and his minions have gained unprecedented access to our federal government. It’s clearly a disaster for our democracy, with an unelected billionaire seemingly being rewarded with broad authority over our government after spending over $290 million to elect Trump and other Republicans. And it’s also an emergency for the census — the foundation for drawing fair electoral maps and ensuring every part of the country gets the resources it needs. You see, in the last two weeks, massive Census Bureau data files that are normally publicly available disappeared from the website. Some of those files have come back online, but this raises concerns about the integrity of this critical data now and going forward. As Trump and Musk try to reshape the federal government to fit their own agenda, we must protect census data from any political manipulation. Our mapping and analytics team is working hard to compile records of past census data so we can closely watch for any changes, and we’re doing everything we can to defeat attacks on the census and our democracy wherever they arise. The fair maps movement protected the 2020 Census from Trump in his first term, and we’ll be prepared no matter what his team throws at us this time around. Together, we can make it clear: our census data and our democracy are not for sale — not now, not ever.
