Team,

This month is Black History Month. It’s a time for us to reflect on the progress our nation has made while also recognizing the work we have ahead of us.

Last year, I attended the dedication in Detroit honoring the Tuskegee Airman and war hero Lt. Col. Alexander Jefferson at Rouge Park. Jefferson was a true American hero and served our nation during World War II. When he returned home from the war after being kept as a prisoner of war, Jefferson faced discrimination, segregation, and prejudice. Still, he continued to serve the community and rose above the discrimination. Jefferson is a testament that even when facing adversity, we can all find hope for equality and equity in our communities.

The history of Black Americans is essential when it comes to American history, but the current administration is trying to erase that history. It’s critical to resist every way we can, from consuming literature and media on the experience of Black citizens in America to acknowledging their abilities to overcome hatred and the journey toward equality.

There is still so much work that still needs to be done to dismantle the barriers that disproportionately affect communities of color. We must continue to work together to fight for equality and make a positive change based on the ideas of liberty and justice that our nation was founded on.

We cannot take the progress we have made for granted nor can we allow ourselves to go backward. Please join me this month in celebrating Black history and taking time to support businesses owned by Black Americans, read literature about Black history, and engage in meaningful conversations about racial injustice and how we can make progress, together.

Thank you,

– Debbie
