The last week has been marked with demonstrations protesting the treatment and ultimate death in police custody of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Yesterday, we saw protests closer to home.
In Tampa, peaceful protests were joined during the day by Mayor Castor and the Tampa Police Chief. In the evening, these protests turned violent ending with the destruction of businesses, the burning of buildings, and injuries of civilians and police officers.
Jacksonville, Miami, and Tallahassee all saw similar scenes. These demonstrations in American cities, small and large, have a sobering affect on all of us and the need for change as soon as possible.
Florida is hurting. This country is hurting.
The African American communities has been calling for our government to address the systems of inequality and injustice and it is time that they were answered. Those with power should use that power to take real action to protect the citizens of our most vulnerable communities. Instead of recognitions of these problems, we are getting silence, escalations, and excuses.
It has never has it been more clear that we need new leadership in this country and in this state. Our Governor and the current legislature aren't addressing these issues, so lets put people in office who will.
We need leaders who acknowledge our faults are committed to taking action.
We need to build a future together as one community, one state, one country.
