President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed a sweeping executive order bringing independent agencies like the FCC, FTC, and SEC under the control of the White House — an action that would greatly expand his power but is almost certainly very illegal, since Congress set up those agencies deliberately to be independent from the power of the presidency. This move comes straight out of the Project 2025 playbook, as its author Russel Vought has been a vocal proponent of asserting control over independent agencies and binding them to the will of the President. It's one more step on the road to kingship; now it's up to the courts now to stop him.

Trump's racism czar Tom Homan has been on the warpath against Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for daring to inform migrants about the rights that they are afforded by US law, making the absolutely preposterous and deeply fascistic (and unconstituitional) assertion that it is somehow illegal to tell people what the law is — and that the DOJ should take action against her. But even prominent right-wing legal scholar Jonathan Turley weighed in against Homan and rightfully pointed out that it's an attack on free speech. Whether or not this will matter for a Trump administration that clearly sees our laws and the Constitution as obstacles to their radical agenda remains to be seen.

That much was made clear on Tuesday when a team of Trump's inexperienced diplomats met with Russia and immediately began offering concessions — and excluded Ukraine and NATO from the talks entirely. Trump followed that up with a press conference in which he blamed Ukraine for starting the war with Russia and made it clear that Russia's status as an isolated pariah is over. "The American team has almost no experience in high-level international negotiation, no regional expertise on Ukraine and Russia, and no relevant foreign language knowledge," said Timothy Snyder, a Yale University professor and Russia expert, wrote on Twitter. "Not true of the Russians, to put it mildly." Ukraine has made it clear that it will not accept any deal in which it is not consulted.

The House GOP budget resolution is in trouble
Lol. Lmao, even. Speaker Mike Johnson is staring down at least a dozen Republican holdouts on the budget blueprint he wants to put on the House floor in the coming days — and he can only afford to lose one member and still approve the resolution along party lines. The addition of a required $2 trillion in budget cuts, which of course means deep cuts to programs like Medicaid, is a no-go for vulnerable Republican Congressmen who don't want to punch their own ticket to having to work a real job again. Other Republicans, like Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, want even DEEPER spending cuts. Navigating these two competing factions is almost impossible without Democratic help, and they sure as shit shouldn't be giving them a single vote without any kind of concessions on reining in Elon Musk and his DOGEbags. Plus, the Senate's own version of a spending bill is nipping at Johnson's heels. Shutdown city, here we come!

Not content with buying just the presidency, Elon Musk is making it clear he's going to be wielding his monstrous fortune to corrupt the rest of America's political races. His next target is Wisconsin, where a crucial state Supreme Court seat is up for grabs on April 1st. Musk is publicly promoting the GOP candidate, anti-abortion extremist Brad Schimel, on Twitter and has poured money into the race through the Building America’s Future PAC, which is set to spend $1.6 million to in attack ads against liberal judge Susan Crawford. Wisconsin is a vital swing state with a perennially razor-thin margin of victory; control over the state Supreme Court would open up the possibility of the GOP using bullshit lawsuits to steal elections, as we're currently seeing play out in North Carolina. This is the first big test facing Democrats in the Trump II era, and we cannot afford to come up short.
