$8.4 million available to prevent closure of behavioral health facilities

Applications are open until funding is exhausted

The Washington Department of Commerce is accepting applications for capital projects that will prevent the closure of behavioral health facilities. Awards will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are exhausted. Commerce has up to $8.4 million available to maintain buildings and preserve existing beds and services.

Eligible organizations and facilities

Closure prevention funds are available for nonprofits, businesses, public agencies, and tribes that operate community hospitals or community-based behavioral health services.

Eligible facilities include acute care hospitals, private psychiatric hospitals, residential treatment facilities, mental health peer respites, and outpatient facilities licensed as behavioral health agencies by the Department of Health.

Also eligible are certain enhanced services facilities and assisted living facilities licensed by the Department of Social and Health Services.

Eligible projects

Closure prevention funds preserve behavioral health facilities through critical repairs or upgrades necessary to keep the facility in use. These include:

  • Physical repairs and upgrades on facility property.
  • Capital maintenance needed to ensure facilities are compliant with current or impending licensing standards.
  • Capital improvements that would increase available cash on hand for facility operations.

In some circumstances, state funds may be used to purchase a non-state-funded facility to keep an existing site operational. Facility or services expansion projects are not eligible.
